Structural Strengthening

& Repair

Structures exposed to harsh corrosive environments often show signs of damage. The integrity of structural elements may be compromised due to construction or design errors. When reinforced concrete shows signs of destress, Structural Repair is required to remove deteriorated concrete materials and apply appropriate specialty repair products.

In some cases, the extent of damage is such that the structural system is no longer able to safely carry loads for the intended service life. In this case Structural Strengthening is needed to remove causes of distress and/or increase the load bearing capacity of the system. When building codes or seismic requirements are revised, or service loads increase due to changes in use, Structural Strengthening solutions restore code compliance and salvage investment value

PME-SBSi have the expertise to design and implement a wide array of structural strengthening and repair solutions includes:

  • Concrete Repair
  • Section enlargement
  • Overlay slabs
  • Span shortening
  • bonded steel plates and shapes
  • Structural stabilization injections
  • Shear reinforcement
  • Seismic retrofit repair and strengthening
  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites
  • Post-tensioning systems

We provide clients with an integrated investigate-design-build (IBD) approach to structural rehabilitation problems as follows:

Corrosion

Management

In the presence of severe and aggressive environments, prevention remains the best corrosion management approach. Steel structures, pressure vessels, industrial plants, pipelines and storage tanks require adequate protection and often rehabilitation when signs of corrosion appear.

For reinforced concrete structures, the alkalinity of concrete is the first line of defence. However, concrete being a porous material with a natural tendency to crack, contaminants present in air and water may result in loss of alkalinity which, coupled with the presence of moisture and oxygen leads to steel corrosion. Concrete design mixes that minimize porosity, barriers and sealers are cost-efficient prevention methods. Since corrosion often starts as a hidden process, by the time the structure shows visible signs of decay such as cracking, delamination and spalling, the process has reached an accelerated phase which, if left untreated may result in structural failure.

PME-SBSi have the expertise to design and implement a wide array of corrosion repair and control solutions that preserve your infrastructure and regain the capacity of corroded structures, including: Conventional repair

  • Conventional repair
  • Protective steel and surface coatings
  • CFRP corrosion repair
  • Catholic Protection “CP” systems

Structural

SBS Slab System

The “SBS Steel Block System ®” is a patented construction technology introduced to the MENA Region during the nineteen eighties. It is a sound, serviceable, durable, time saving and above all economical system that enables architects and engineers to overcome critical design challenges and come up with esthetical, lightweight high performance structures.

The system is an assemblage of “I” section joists, applied in one or two orthogonal directions, consisting of top and bottom concrete flanges accommodating main steel, connected by vertical concrete web and containing corrugated SBS steel blocks as voids. It has been developed and fine tuned through years of rigorous operational research.

The execution of SBS Slab System® is performed under the direct supervision of our specialized staff. Conventional construction techniques are used, no special equipment is required. For cast in situ applications, the sequence is as follows:

1.
Steel Placement
2.
Bottom flange
3.
SBS blocks
4.
Top flange
